GIP! More or less gratuitous icon post (thank you, snarkydame - it's perfect ♥)! ( Pre-breakfast moment of panic )Edit: Whee! So after breakfast, it really did all work out! \o/ I've got a confirmation! MK Shuttle will be taking me from the airport all the way to xparrot's. YAY! ♥ |

fan types I've had a theory for a while that there are two fundamental types of fans - the intellectual/analytical kind, and the emotional kind, and major fan conflict and wank can arise when these two types interact, because they approach fanning differently, and therefore have a difficult time understanding where a fan of the other type is coming from. ( in which I go on for entirely too long about intellectual vs emotional fanning ) |

New Computer I have a new computer! It's very shiny, if not all that advanced. In the end, I went for the Toshiba Satellite. What made me finally decide was trying out a mini-laptop in the store, and discovering how difficult it is to type normally on a tiny keyboard. Besides, as I have noticed now, this thing weighs a lot less than Boomer anyway, so that's good.
The main irritation with it is, as I predicted, Windows Vista. I might not keep it, but at least I managed to make it look more or less like I want it to, and I've sorted out the most annoying habits it had (I hate it when computers talk down to me! >_<). Other than that, no real problems with it so far.
I've been keeping both laptops online side by side today, comparing and moving stuff from the old to the new. This feels weird. I've never had a new computer before while the old one was still functional! But there is a real difference between them. Apart from the fact that Boomer crashes (only once so far today...) and the new one has a faster USB connection to the external HD, the new one actually feels faster, both on the web and in the files. I think it's mostly because there's less clutter on the HD, but it does feel nice. |

Flail spazz whee I need an icon of someone running around flailing their arms like a chicken with its head cut off.
Mostly because I'm doing exactly that. Well. Maybe not flailing, so much, and a lot of the running is metaphorical rather than, uh. Literal?
I would say I'm getting a little anxious about the whole Japan thing now. And the trip. Though mostly the trip will just be long, long, long, and I need to make sure to store up on podfic!
Right now I'm not multitasking as much as I'm simply multi-spazzing. Reinstalling WinXP last night didn't help much, since I had to figure out how to get the internet and sound working, and why the Stand By button was gone (missing video driver!) and I'm still shuffling files back and forth between the newly cleared internal 60 GB, and the two external drives - my new WD Passport is shiny, and so much bigger on the inside!
Anyway. I can't seem to focus on one of the many things I need to be doing for longer than a couple of minutes - which is why it's taken me two hours to go from having this window open to actually typing something. And now that I'm typing it's mostly spazz, and not really content, unless OMG need to burn another DVD no wait what about the insurance papers and should I laminate the slip or should I make that list of which Japanese textbooks to bring and why haven't I inventoried my doujinshi and where is my suitcase anyway... what? Wait. I think I was trying to say that it's not content. It's just confusing. Confusing content?
Sorry. I'm being externally confusing, too, as well as internally confusing, but at least I have a working Stand By button, and my video files no longer freeze when I try to play them! \o/ Victory is mine! Unless I get refused entry to Japan and deported to Switzerland. Which would suck. At least if I'm deported to Geneva, I could call my godmother - I don't want to be deported to Zürich!
...wait. No. I don't want to be deported at all, and I have things to do and -- okay, just. If I've told you I'd do something for you, or if you're waiting on a mail answer or a comment or something? Um. It might be a while? As in, it might be until I've settled in in Kyoto, because this is nuts, and I shouldn't be spreading my nuttiness all over the intrawebs! They're nutty enough as it is.
(You know what's weird? What's weird is standing in the shower, and realizing that, that's it. Two more showers, and then I'll be showering in Japan. It's the little things. I can have okonomiyaki for supper on Wednesday. OMGWTFBBQ WHAT.) |

Still sick, but a bit less exhausted. Don't want to go back to work tonight after a whole week off, that's for sure! Had a great time at the Grand Canyon. If you ever get a chance to go, definitely do. The view is amazing, and really makes you feel different. Closer to the deity of your choice, I guess. I can see why so many native american groups think of it as a holy place. Took a ton of pictures, but most of them are still on the camera. For now you get a picture from my cell phone. Pretty place. Current Mood: weird |

So, this is where I'll be living for six months...! Phew. I feel much more beat than my recent activities really allow for. I guess I'm in a weird brainspace, too. Limbo. Not completely here, not yet there. ( What I've been doing ) Kyoto, yes. This time, I'll be living right smack in the middle of Kyoto. Which is both cool and terrifying. Last time I lived up by the northern hills, pretty much on the foot of Hieizan, and I liked that. I liked having the river right next door, and the beautiful Takaragaike park a short bike ride away. I could go somewhere I didn't see any roads or big houses, and it was wonderful. Now? Well. Check it out: ( My place, with instructive Google Map caps! )But even with all this flailing about in panic about city air choking me to death and all - that's not really important. It's part of my Kyoto experience, to be sure, and I really am spazzing about wilting like a delicate special snowflake flower in the crowded city center, but! ( The apartment I got really is PERFECT, for lots of reasons. But mostly for this one. )And finally, one more reason why this is made of awesome, if my papers can be believed: Expect to be spammed! ♥ Current Music: Del Amitri - Nothing Ever Happens |

McShep Chibi Comic: "An Attention Deficit" The lack of a new ep this week makes for a very sad Gnine (though it is happy-making in that it means naye will be with us in Japan to watch the conclusion! W00t!), but, as I keep reminding myself over and over again, at least we don't have to wait 'til January! Did still manage to knock out a comic this week, though. Hope it might help a little in balancing the lack of new on-screen dorktasticness ^_- ( Latest McShep Chibi Comic: 'An Attention Deficit' ) |

sorry, politics. skip if you don't want to read. look, i'm not an obama fanatic. i'm definitely not a democratic fanatic. there probably isn't anyone on capitol hill or near it or even looking at it that is as socially liberal and fiscally conservative as i am.
but the thought of sarah palin in the white house turns my stomach.
actually, it does a lot more than that. but i won't go into gory detail, in case there are staunch republicans reading this. i will, however, note that you would think we as a nation would have learned from the last eight years that it takes more than a drawl and folksy charm and the ability to appeal to the average american (who, and rest assured i am including myself, is pretty abysmally ignorant) to qualify as the leader of the country.
to describe what i think of sarah palin's performance in the VP debates, i have to steal a line from colin farrell's character about bruges--"if i were retarded and lived on a farm, i might be impressed. but i wasn't, so i'm not." and that, i feel, is being unfair to farmers.
since when did the bar get set so low that all you had to do was open your mouth and people would think you did a credible job answering--or not answering--the question? granted, she did okay for being a graduate of cram school, but those are NOT the parameters i want my potential future president to be judged by!!! i'm sorry, ma'am, but if i want a soccer mom in the white house, i'll go out and find a soccer mom who at least believes in evolution, equal civil rights for gays, and has lived in one of the 48 states that bears a stronger resemblance to mine! NOT a woman who doesn't know the name of the general in afghanistan, the number of troops we have out, anything about economics, the political picture in the middle east, or how far we really are from energy independence. NOT a woman who can't name a few decent newspapers and has no knowledge of recent judicial happenings. NOT a woman who can't understand or doesn't know about the harm that her predecessor has done by overstepping his bounds. NOT a woman who has hearts in her eyes when she mentions reagan (who, by the way, was twice as charming and three times as coherent as ms. palin and still had some fucking stupid ideas, but at least i could understand people voting HIM into office), and thinks he invented the "city on a hill" quote.
i'll apologize for not cutting due to length, but not opinion. |

Today I had the exam for the paleography course. It was short, only three weeks (though point-wise it was equivalent of 5 weeks full time!), but pretty intense. I had a blast with it, and now the medieval scrabbles are not longer just patterns to me, but actual text. It's very cool. (In the case of Latin, it's not completely understandable text, but I've been working on that too, and I do understand more than I did)
The exam was really easy - I'm almost disappointed. We had four hours to transcribe two short text in Latin and one a bit longer in medieval Swedish. I was done in one hour, spent another ten minutes looking for hidden difficulties, and, finding none, I left before anyone else. I feel smart. ^.^
Then I took a walk on Långholmen (an island in Stockholm that is mostly park). It's incredibly beautiful, especially in the places with entire groves of Swedish maples, with leaves shifting in color from green to bright yellow to deep red, falling everywhere. So pretty. |

SGA fic: Blue Colorado Skies The sgahcchallenges 2008 Fic Exchange is go! I got a Rodney h/c prompt (yum!) that included "steampunk". Which. Well. I thought I knew what I was doing. Perhaps not so much? Please note: Some AUs are painstakingly crafted, every element lovingly researched. This is not one of the those AUs. (Sekkrit message to Mom: do not let Dad read this one. It doesn't have any slash, but I fear the historical inaccuracies would be even rougher on him.) It is intended to be a romp, with h/c, and I hope on those two criteria it scores. SGA: Blue Colorado Skies {~11,400 words} PG, AU, h/c, teamRodney had guessed John Smith would be trouble the day he rode into town and tramped into his shop, yellow with dust and stinking of horse and sweat, and asked if he was McKay. Rodney had looked at the man's worn boots, his shabby black Stetson, and the Colt holstered at his side, and known no good could come of this. Also, yes, I am anal. Just got the HDTV version of "First Contact", and had to check on a couple crucial (non-spoilery) details: For the curious, everybody's favorite male gate tech Chuck was reading The Martian General's Daughter. Can't tell if John's still got War & Peace or something else, though. I know y'all were dying to know this! |

Wednesday Afternoon Linkdump It's a gray, rainy Wednesday, and so I randomly bring cool stuff to click! Life is back! This makes me very happy. Life is probably the best new show I've seen all year, and now it's getting a shiny second season, and it is just as visually interesting and full of character awesomeness as the first season was. I need to do a full pimping post, but for now - look! If you're in the US, you can watch the episodes right on NBC's webpage! This is cool. A new kind of community, a new kind of connectivity, a new kind of creativity. I've linked this before, but it's almost impossible to tell people exactly why this video is one of the most fascinating and moving pieces on us that I have ever seen. Really, though - if you don't watch anything else, just let it load until 43:37, "Seriously Playful Participatory Media Culture". It's us! (Us fandom, us who create using others' creations, us who make our home on the digital, and know our way around countless different worlds.) And speaking of us - Us, by lim [YouTube]. A vid that I didn't get the first time I saw it, but now that I do get it, it's just - it's one of the most beautiful, moving things I have ever seen. ( This is us )So, yes. Reccing this vid with all my heart, while flailing with incoherent love for us. Which makes it fitting that the next link I've got is one to Fanlore. Finally, the fandom wiki us up and running! And it's exploded with entries - I've found things in the Glossary that even I didn't recognize, and I've been an active part of fandom (and curious about fandom's history) for a dozen years. Such cool stuff! ♥ What it's all about. Still on a fannish track - Yuletide is drawing near! There's been an announcement in the comm that fandom nomination will start a bit later this year, but it is still scheduled. And as a part of a "we can do this!" conspiracy of three, I already have my nominations ready, and if there are three fandoms I think I can do fic for among the final list, I will participate in my very first Yuletide this year! Yes, even with Japan and everything. What can I say - it's such a pan-fandom event, I really don't want to miss out. Non-fannishly, Google have set up a charity challenge - Project 10 to the 100th, which looks most intriguing. And! A possible planet around another sun captured on an image from the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii. If it really is a planet, that's - wow. I don't even have any words for how weird and wonderful it is to be around for this kind of thing. |

Beautiful September In exactly a week, I will be in a plane somewhere over Russia, headed for Kyoto. Where xparrot and gnine and utopiantrunks are, but shayera isn't. I am happy and scared and excited and a little sick to the stomach with ignored stress. And I'm confused. How did this happen? Is it really happening, or... it's not really happening, is it? Because I still know exactly what it feels like to want to go back to Kyoto, to long to go to that city and be with those people, and know that it is an impossible longing. What I don't know is what it feels like to sit around and know that in a week, I will be on my way there. Anyway. I have someplace to live, apparently! Which is neither in the first dorm I was informed I would get a room in, nor in the second, where I was promised a place when things didn't work out in the first. Third time's the charm? (I would say more, but since I'm not actually getting the fact that I will move in there next Wednesday, and live there for six months, I'll just sit here reeling for a little while longer.) Today was the last day of September. October is coming, with frost and rain. I have photos of my end of September, from yesterday, before the clouds swept in.

Visit Photos It feels kind of strange and empty here now, without tacittype and deltacephei. I mean, they were only here for a couple of days, but we had such a good time...! It's incredible how fun it can be to sit with your computer and check your LJ when two other people in the room are doing the same thing. Not to mention curl up on the bed and watch shiny stuff together. It's not as much fun to watch stuff alone! And we even did things outside! Touristy things! We were incredibly lucky, and got the best weather we've had the entire month. We got to see Sweden in September from its most spectacular side - crystal clear air, and a jewel-toned mosaic of blue sky, green grass, red houses and leaves of every golden hue. As usual, I took pictures! And I have about twenty of them here. ( Featuring, among other things, cobblestone streets, little red cabins, and curious horses. ) |

About writing, characters, and how not to make a character be liked I've been in a very meta mood lately. And thinking about character love and character hate and the like/dislike in between has illuminated a general writing/storytelling principle for me, one that I think TV shows might ignore or mistake at times, and one that needs close attention paid, because I think writers (professionals as much as amateurs) sometimes confuse it: "Everybody likes a character" is not a way to make that character be liked by the audience. The key is - it's not a way to make that character be disliked, either. It's actually an emphasizing storytelling device, reinforcing the feelings the audience already has, but it's often mistaken for a positive or a negative one. ( I actually like this device myself, but... ) |

SPN 4x02 Hope everyone's having a good Friday! ♥ I still don't know where I'm going to live in Japan (so much for "I'll get back to you early next week"!), but I had a wonderful day. Except for the bit where I went to the dentist, and now feel like someone's pried my jaw open with a carjack, and pulled at my teeth with pliers. But it's all for a good cause, so what's little blood on my eyebrow between dental hygienist and patient? Part of my lovely day was getting together with one of my oldest friends, and, among many other fun things, watching the first two episodes of NCIS! Which was good! I liked it! And I would love to keep watching it, but I sort of... ran out of space. Again. So it's a good thing I've ordered a new HD - WD My Passport, 320 GB. Again, thanks to everyone who helped me choose! Of course, once I get it, I don't know how much time I'll have for new shows, but - hey, these things always work out, somehow. (Is there a point where I should stop watching NCIS, or does it stay good all the way through the current season?) And then I came home and watched new Supernatural! And I liked it! This makes me happier than I think it should, really. ( \o/ )( Dear SPN-fen on my f'list, please do me a favor? )( The unavoidable squee harshing )( Whee! ) |
